Gov John C. Brown 1874 Circular
Item #: TEN-001575

"Important Correspondence Between Citizens of Memphis and Governor Brown-Views of the Latter on the Leading Questions of the Canvass-Our Public Debt and the History of its Reduction-An Elaborate Review of the Funding Policy-The Civil Rights Bill Unconstitutional and Subversive of Popular Liberty." Reprinted from the Memphis Appeal, July 26. Four pages, measuring 13 by 9 and a half inches. Encapsulated. This was so dull I just couldn't plow through it however there is some racist content. "Who would allow his child to sit on the same bench, and recite in the same classes, and grow up on terms of childish intimacy with the black child? No man who loves his children, or retains one vestige of his pride of race, will submit to this degradation  of his offspring.." More along this line from Governor John C Brown.

John Bell+1846 Signed Lithograph
Item #: TEN-001353

I'm not sure what to call this so I'll just describe it. This rag paper item measures about 5 by 6 inches. It has moderately heavy age spots scattered throughout. Fold in the middle and a nice litho scene. It bears some resemblance to the early state seals. Note that Tennessee is misspelled. It could have been issued in 1846 which would have been Tennessee's 50th anniversary of statehood. It is autographed by four prominent Tennesseans. The first signer is who was a US Senator (1838-1839 and 1843-1845. The was also an attorney in Nashville and a State Legislator. He ran for Governor in 1845 as a Whig. The second signer is Spencer Jarnagin. He was a US Senator in 1843-1847, a lawyer in Knoxville and later Memphis. He served in the State Legislature in 1833-1835 as a Whig. The third signer is Hopkins Tacy Turney, a US Senator in 1825-1831, 1835-1837. He was an attorney in Jasper and later Winchester. Turney was a Democrat. Finally the last signer is John Bell. Bell was a US Senator, a US Congressman, Speaker of the House, Secretary of War, and ran for President on the Constitutional Union ticket in 1860.

ALS-Gov Malcolm Patterson-Significant Content
Item #: POL-001274

Interesting letter on Executive letterhead from Malcolm Patterson to Hubert Carter of Lafeyette Tennessee. Patterson appears to be carefully distancing himself from a situation in which a Judge Murray was asking for compensation of services rendered in getting a pardon for a prisoner. This is significant as Patterson was accused of granting pardons to frequently during his terms and it was also charged that his associates made money selling these pardons.
