State Debt Issue-Tennessee-Political Ticket
Item #: NEW-0015572
|
|
This is a fragile, but rare ticket used in the election regarding the State Debt Issue after the Civil War.
This issue involves the debt accumulated for bonds sold to help build railroads prior to the Civil War. This debt increased during the war as unpaid interest accumulated., and later rose to over $4300 dollars as the state struggled to repair the railroads and build new ones. Governor Porter of course felt that it was important to honor our debts or work out a settlement with the bond holders while many wanted to either repudiate the debt or reconstruct it that would favor the state. In January 1877 Porter asked the State Legislature to create a committee to work out an "honorable” settlement. The General Assembly instead asked that the creditors submit a plan of debt adjustment. A reasonable plan which would have reduced the debt by 40 percent was submitted but the legislatures voted down the plan and instead suggested that the State suspend all further payments of interest with some exceptions. Porter vetoed the plan which was over-riden and as a result all payments to creditors where stopped.
The issue raged on and on becoming a major issue in the gubernatorial campaign of 1878 and 1882 before a compromise was eventually reached.

This letter dated 1900 is on the official letterhead of the Committee on Military Affairs-House of Representatives. Walter P Brownlow, Congressman from Tennessee is addressing Paul E Divine of Tazewell, Tennessee. Divine was a local mover and shaker. Brownlow is complaining that a local appointed official of not getting behind the ticket. "see if all republicans are in line and working to build up a powerful organization. The first thing is to see if all officials are doing their duty. Some one has called the attention of the President to the fact that one B F Simmons of Minkton, who is postmaster, or whose wife is postmaster there is not working in harmony with his district nominnies in your August election." more. I have a feeling that if the said official did not get behind the ticket that there would have been a new postmaster. Ragged edge and rough area at the bottom left.

Let's Win the Banner is the title of this interesting circular regarding a letter received from distinguished citizens of Nashville regarding the race for Governor. The committee consisted of Judge John M Lea, General William H Jackson of Belle Meade Mansion, Dr. Thomas Menees, prominent Doctor, Hon. John Vertrees and J M Dickinson, UCV Commander, stating their intentions to award to the Democrats of the County in Tennessee who should poll in the November election the greatest increase over the vote cast for President Cleveland in 1892, a banner designed by Miss Suie Wendell of Murfreesboro, a Banner. The design was described as the Coat of Arms of Tennessee and a picture of Peter Turney and one of Isham Harris of heroic size and painted on heavy white silk and a typical emblem of Tennessee on the other side. One can't help for wonder, "Where is this Banner now?" Folds and a couple of small tears in the margin.
