Southern Railway Company-1899 LH
Item #: NEW-0010055

Early railroad advertising letterhead for the Southern Railway company, which according to Wikipedia was a former United States railroad. It was the product of nearly 150 predecessor lines that were combined, reorganized and recombined beginning in the 1830s, formally becoming the Southern Railway in 1894. It was placed under control of the Norfolk Southern Corporation, along with the Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W), in 1982, and was renamed Norfolk Southern Railway in 1990. (The N&W continued to exist as a subsidiary until 1997.) The back of the letterhead is the best part which shows a map of the railway lines for the company.
Age toning and an edge tear.

Mississippi Central RailRoad Co-Invoice-1865
Item #: NEW-008984

This invoice was printed on the back of another form. Post war item from a Railroad which was the target of much war activity. Grease spot on mid right hand edge. The original Mississippi Central line was chartered in 1852. Construction began in 1853 and the line was completed in 1860, just prior to the Civil War, from Canton, Mississippi to Jackson, Tennessee. The southern terminus of the line connected to the New Orleans, Jackson and Great Northern Railroad at Canton. It also connected to the Memphis and Charleston Railroad at Grand Junction, Tennessee and the Mobile and Ohio Railroad at Jackson, Tennessee. The Mississippi Central was the scene of several military actions from 1862 - 1863 and was severely damaged during the fighting. Company president, Absolom M. West succeeded in repairing the damage and returning it to operating condition soon after the end of the War. The original Mississippi Central line was merged into the Illinois Central Railroad subsidiary Chicago, St. Louis and New Orleans Railroad in several transactions finally completed in 1878.

Marietta-Cincinnati Railroad Pass 1817
Item #: NEW-008908

Scarce pass by a railroad that was not in existence very long. This attractive pass was used by Col VK Stevenson. Minor wear .Mint condition on this railroad pass made out for "Col. V K Stephenson".  V K Stevenson  was active in creating the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad and spent much of the middle and late 1840's promoting the connection of Middle Tennessee to the Atlantic South.  Although an important and productive man, he did not distinguish himself by fleeing Nashville after the fall of Fort Donelson when he was in charge of moving supplies out of the city.

Charles Lindbergh Lot
Item #: NEW-006546

Four different items which I purchased shrink wrapped. Two different paper posters. One large one made for a Welcome home Colonel Lindbergh to Los Angeles California. This one measures around 17 by 6 inches. Upper left hand corner separation which evidently occurred after being shrink wrapped. Also a tear just below the word Electric at the bottom. Others nips and edge tears. The poster is a combination of information about the parade and also an advertisement by the Pacific Electric Railway. There is a smaller identical poster which measures about 3 by 9 inches. Two large nips out of bottom edge. The third item is a celluloid advertising button for Bond bread which features the Spirit of St Louis. Finally there is a brass pin which is pinned to the original paper, both in good condition. Note:  The large poster has suffered some damage in my care.  The left upper corner is now clipped which will, of course, not be seen in the scan.

John J Harding-Famous Nashville Aviator
Item #: NEW-005767

Back of this photo reads Lt. Harding and Sgt Ralph Anderson. Purchased from the estate of a famous Nashville family. Harding made the first around-the globe journey by an airplane. Harding, while in the service, was one of eight aviators chosen to attempt this flight. The two-seater biplanes, named Boston, Chicago, New Orleans and Seattle took off on April 6th, 1924 from Washington State to cross the Pacific. Harding was a mechanic and co-pilot on the New Orleans. Only the Chicago and New Orleans completed the trip. Harding returned to Seattle on Sept 28, having flown 27,000 miles. Harding was the great-great grandson of John Harding, the founder of Belle Meade. Harding was also related to the Polk family. See Polk's Folly by William R Polk.
