1908 Indian Totem Pole-Seattle Washington
Item #: NEW-009757

Neat old postcard.  Sign for the Olympic Hotel. and what looks like a horse drawn trolley.  There are scattered very small notches on the top and bottom edge and a small corner crease on the upper right hand tip and a light one on the bottom left hand corner. There is a very interesting story about  the totem pole which was stolen from an Indian tribe in Alaska and then sold to the city by the culprits.  Needless to say there was a great deal of legal action which ensued. On October 22, 1938, an arsonist seriously damaged the totem and it was removed. In 1940 the totem was replaced with a replica carved by the descendants of the carvers of the original totem.

I just couldn't resist this beautiful card. I can't quite read the title above the address which is 307 Pike Street, Seattle Wa as it is cut off. I think it says Lotus but can't read the rest. It was cancelled in 1909 from Seattle. Roughness to the upper edge and the corners. Please view the scan.

This neat street scene from Spokane Washington has a Kodol sticker added, probably by the correspondent who said "I sold the drug store on the corner today, signed Papa". Wear to the corners and some scattered cancel marks.
