This is a nice clear albumen which measures 8 X 10 inches. Pach Brothers photographers, New York. Flaking off of the color on the edges, not in the photo. I posted this on Facebook trying to learn what it might be. No one knew but one person thought it might be a military academy.

Soldiers Medal
Item #: NEW-0013590
|
|
Here's a medal that is highly sought as it is not given out very lightly. Criteria: Awarded to any person of the Armed Forces of the United States or of a friendly foreign nation who, while serving in any capacity with the Army of the United States, distinguished himself or herself by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. Often, the medal is awarded to soldiers who risk their lives to save other people. The medal can be awarded in peacetime if the soldier's heroism is held to be equal to or greater than the level which would have justified an award of the Distinguished Service Cross if the act had taken place in combat.
The medal is not named so there is no way to link it to the soldier. Good condition. It is repelled by a magnet and is heavy so it is bronze. It has a crimped brooch.

I think this is a pretty rare item as I could not find another example of one on the web. It was probably for a badge and/or an ID card for a Civil Defense Medical person. Real, not fake leather so I believe it is early.

Frontier Leather Tinder Kit
Item #: NEW-0011450
|
|
This item measures a little over two inches wide. When you open it up there are two compartments and the flint was found in one little pocket. The tinder would have been in the other pocket. Two holes in the top where the strap probably was. Note the stone striker is hanging from the bottom. The leather inside the kit is more worn than the outer. I believe this looks old enough to have been carried during the Revolutionary War or perhaps as late as the Indian Wars. Who knows but I would love to know where it has been.

Lot-Buttons-1812 War Dug in-Savannah
Item #: NEW-0010606
|
|
This lot consists of eight buttons, most I have identified as being from 1812. They were sold to me as all being from that period but I have not done exhaustive research on them. The patina is very heavy but most are clear enough to easily identify and some are quite sharp. Four have the complete shank and the others only have remnants of the shank. I have not been able to see any back marks and if present in the first place have been lost to the ages. The small rounded button has only enough relief to see that it is an eagle. The back side has two stars above and below the shank and are quite sharp. There may be something else but I can't tell what it was. I was told that these were recently dug in Savannah at the site of a new excavation. The buttons are from infantry and artillery. Examples are: three 1 Reg and one which reads 1 Corps.

Item #: NEW-0010207

The scan only shows a third of the complete roster for the year 1919-1920 but it is complete and in alphabetic order. Folds, some crumpling around the folds and tears at top edge. The insignia and ribbon came with the roster and hopefully all are related to GMA, which is now a Junior College as well as a military academy. The ribbon is very dingy and the G M A has the pin missing.

1842 Document-Tennessee Militia Inventory by Captain.
Item #: NEW-009961
|
|
Legal sized document which reports the strength and condition of a company of militia commanded by Patrick G Giles (?) attached to the 83rd Regiment of Tennessee Militia for the year 1842. What follows is the inventory: Captain 1, Lieutenants 2-Ensigns 1-Sergeants 1-Corporals 1-Musicians 2-Privates 87. swords 1-Muskets 5-rifles-13-shot guns 23-bayonets...pouches & horns 25-horns 25-...drums 1-fifes 1-colors-5. Condition problems are stains at top and bottom where the documents had old scotch tape holding it to cardboard for many, many years. This has caused some toning to the paper. There is also a fresh edge tear due to improper packing when it was mailed to me.
