Bracelet-WWII USS Alabama
Item #: NEW-0017161

This interesting item came in a lot of WWII items. I am speculating that words U S S Alabama were painted on by a sailor. Although the bracelet is gold in color, it is clearly not real gold. I believe it was a project of some bored sailor but I think it is neat. It reads U.S.S Alabama although those words may not show in the scan.

This is a vintage advertising poster for Wrigley's Spearmint Chewing Gum. It measures 25 by 10 and a half inches.  It is framed and can be mailed framed or unframed.  I note three edge tears. Gum was very popular with the soldiers during WW II as a stress reliever.  The manufacturing of gum became difficult after Pearl Harbor with the strict rationing of sugar. Poignant World War II Poster
Item #: NEW-0012748

This is my favorite WWII poster showing a dog whose master will never return "because somebody talked.”  This was a common theme with WWII posters which warned soldiers not to share information with others.

The poster measures 27 and a half by 19 and a half inches.  Excellent condition other than the folds which was how the posters were mailed.  The bottom edge reads US Government Printing Office-1944-O-579038 on the left side and Distributed by the issuing agencies by the Office of War Information on the right side.  The artist appears to be Wegley.  The most economical way to mail the poster would be to fold it along the original folds.

Ignore the camera flash in the scan.

555th Parachute Infantry Reunion-Black Airmen
Item #: NEW-0012558

This program for the 555th Parachute Infantry was held at Fort Benning in Columbus Georgia in 1984.  This unit was made up of African Americans.  The program has photographs and ads on the back welcoming the group.  Here is a history of this historic group of Airmen.

The unit was activated as a result of a recommendation made in December 1942 by the Advisory Committee on Negro Troop Policies, chaired by the Assistant Secretary of War,John J. McCloy. In approving the committee's recommendation for a black parachute battalion, Chief of Staff General George C. Marshall decided to start with a company, and on 25 February 1943 the 555th Parachute Infantry Company was constituted.

On 19 December 1943, Headquarters, Army Ground Forces, authorized the activation of the company as an all-black unit with black officers as well as black enlisted men. All unit members were to be volunteers, with an enlisted cadre to be selected from personnel of the 92d Infantry Division at Fort Huachuca, Arizona.

The company was officially activated on 30 December 1943 at Fort Benning, Georgia. After several months of training, the unit moved to Camp Mackall, North Carolina, where it was reorganized and redesignated on 25 November 1944 as Company A of the newly-activated 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion.

World War II

Members of the battalion are briefed before takeoff from Fort Dix in 1947
The battalion did not serve overseas during World War II. One of the reasons for this decision dealt with the issue of segregation. European theater commanders "simply had no use" for the Black jumpers. The Asian theater was a different matter. Members of the 555 hoped to get into the war against the Japanese. According to Sgt Walter Morris "It was a secret mission called Operation Firefly. We thought we were going overseas to [Gen. Douglas] MacArthur's theater". It wasn't until they arrived in Oregon, in May 1945 that they learned they'd be fighting the Japanese on the fire line in the Western United States.[1]

During the winter of 1944–45, the Japanese sent 9000 fire balloons toward the western coast of North America. It was believed 1000 succeeded in reaching the United States, and 300 were witnessed. After three days, each balloon dropped an incendiary bomb.[2] In order to conceal the efficacy of these attacks, the missions of the 555th was kept clandestine in nature. In addition to fires started by the enemy incendiary devices, the 555th fought numerous other forest fires. Stationed at Pendleton Field (site of initial training for the Doolittle's raid on Japan) Oregon, with a detachment in Chico, California, unit members courageously participated in dangerous fire-fighting missions throughout the Pacific Northwest during the summer and fall of 1945. The group engaged in over 1200 missions, earning the nickname "Smoke Jumpers" in addition to "Triple Nickles." The only fatality in the unit died while jumping on 6 August 1945.

The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion was nicknamed the "Triple Nickles" because of its numerical designation and the selection of 17 of the original 20-member "colored test platoon" from the 92nd Infantry (Buffalo) Division. Hence, the origin of the term Buffalo Nickles; the spelling derives from old English. Three buffalo nickels joined in a triangle or pyramid is the identifying symbol.[3]

Soon after returning to Camp Mackall in October 1945, the 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion was transferred to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, its home for the next two years. During this period the unit was attached to the elite 82d Airborne Division. When the battalion was inactivated on 15 December 1947, most of its personnel were reassigned to the division's organic 3d Battalion,505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

WWII Embroidered Blood Chit
Item #: NEW-0012118

I was very excited when I began to research this item, which through my research points it to be possibly from the Flying Tigers Squadron during World War II. There were, however, other units active in China including pilots who flew over "The Hump" airlifting supplies to the Chinese army and citizens following Japan's blockage of the Burma road so that supplies could not get in.    The flag measures 11 plus by 8 plus inches.  Some pin holes. It appears to be hand embroidery on silk.  It has possibly been cut down as the workmanship on the hemming does not match the quality of the rest of the piece.  See scans.

Reference for the item is the Wikipedia entries on blood chits and the Flying Tigers and also google blood chits of the China-Burma-India theatre. This example matches exactly a box on the left hand side in the body of the article on the Blood Chits. This item was translated for me through several channels ending with a Taiwanese native.  His or her translation was "Foreigners came to China to assist in battles.  All (Chinese) servicemen and civilians should rescue and guard them."  The translation on the web site reads "Save soldier foreign come protect civilian person China one American help body fight." This particular blood was identified as the second edition of the original blood chit used by the Flying Tigers and the 14th Volunteer Bomb Group operating in China. There are many varieties of the blood chits made both by the American military, the Chinese military and local artisans which I suspect this one was made by. Some were sewn onto jackets, inside or outside, or just carried on their person.

Needless to say, these blood chits have been reproduced throughout the years.  The embroidery appears to me to be hand done and the whole item has some age on it.  Hopefully there would be interested buyers who know more than I do and can quickly ascertain whether this is indeed from WWII.  I bought this from a trusted dealer who had kept it for about twenty years and he obtained it from someone who was an advanced collector of WWII items.

WWII Soldier Grouping-Marine Corps-WIA-Iwo Jima
Item #: NEW-0011863

This poignant grouping was recently found in a Nashville estate.  The items related to Cpl Edwin N Ellis USMC Birmingham Alabama who was wounded in action at Iwo Jima.  The little saved newspaper article relates that he participated in three invasions in the Pacific area. The lot contains his Purple Heart with some wear to the little ribbon bar.  The medal is not named or numbered but the Navy, unlike the Army did not number their Purple Hearts.  There is his identification bracelet which bears his name and on the back "Birmingham Alabama".   Marked 25 K on Sterling.  Rounding out the grouping is the Victory Medal and two brass Marine insignia.

Ellis is on the roster of the Second Batallion, 28th Division and he died in 1980 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Birmingham.

Important WWII Medal Grouping-General Legrande Diller
Item #: NEW-007624

This lot consists of medals awarded to Brigider General Legrande A Diller who was Aide to General Douglas McArthur and his chief apologist. There are three named medals in the presentation cases and a ribbon denoting service in the Philippines. They are replacement medals. I picked this grouping up at a local flea market where the person was selling it for someone else. Diller died at the age of 86 at his home in Reynolds Georgia. These medals include a Legion of Merit Badge, Officer Grade, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star. Diller was also rewarded the Distinguished Service Medal but it is missing in action. The image of Diller was taken from the web. He is the first one on the right hand side. Photograph-Lockheed's Shooting Star Airplanes
Item #: NEW-007556

Large photograph which measures 16 and a half by 18 inches. It has been shrunk wrapped which I have left on for protection. It is harder to view the condition although I can see some small edge tears and maybe two rather long scratches. Overall condition is good. These planes with a radar snout were made in Marietta Georgia and first saw action toward the end of WWII and later more extensivley during the Korean War. Here is some information taken from the web: Few airplanes in the history of aeronautics have been as successful as the Lockheed Shooting Star. It was the first operational jet fighter in the United States when it went into service in 1945. It emerged as victor in the world's first all-jet combat, and it won the distinction of remaining in production for a full 15 years after the experimental model was first flown. The airplane had its origin in June 1943, when Lockheed was requested to design a fighter around the De Havilland turbojet engine developed in England in response to Germany's twin-engine jet fighter, the Messerschmitt Me 262. The XP-80 was designed and built in the amazing period of only 143 days--37 days less than the original schedule. It was flown for the first time on January 8, 1944, and its performance was considered sensational.

Nice mounted photograph of a Grumman Widgeon plane used mainly as a sea rescue plane during World War II. Photograph measures twelve and a half inches by nine and a half inches. According to Wikipedia the first prototype flew in 1940, and the first production aircraft went to the United States Navy as an anti-submarine aircraft. In total, 266 were built, including 176 for the military. During World War II, they served with the US Navy, Coast Guard, Civil Air Patrol and Army Air Force, as well as with the British Royal Navy, who called it the "Gosling".

Photograph-Gloster Meteor-World War II Airplane
Item #: NEW-007503

This is a large photograph which measures 12 by 9 + inches mounted on a larger board. Nice condition on the photograph but wear to the board, especially at the corners, including an area where the price sticker was removed. The following is a history of this historic plane which was first used in World War II. The history was taken from the web. The Gloster Meteor was the first jet-powered aircraft to enter operational service for any air force in history. Though the Messerschmitt Me 262 Schwalbe was also under development at the same time, the Meteor actually beat the Me 262 to operational status by a reported mere number of days. Along with being the first jet fighter in service, the system also held the distinction of being the only Allied jet aircraft to see any form of combat in the Second World War. Futuristic by any standard, the Meteor was designed with a low-monoplane profile with two turbojet engines. The twin engines had become a requirement of the aircraft as the thrust capabilities of a single turbojet at the time was insufficient to power any sort of aircraft - let alone a fighter. A single tail rudder and powered tri-cycle landing gear rounded out the list of innovations in early models. Armament consisted of a 4 x 20mm cannon assembly and an ejection seat was standard - that latter addition in itself was revolutionary, albeit a dangerous feature for early jet fighter pilots. Early Meteors were put into action versus the dreaded German V-1 rockets being hurled against England. As rocket interceptors, the Meteor could supply the speed and firepower to knock the intruding rockets out of their flight path. One particular mission, a Meteor pilot actually used his wing to tip the V-1 rocket out of flight after his four cannon had jammed (an early problem with Meteor armament that was shortly rectified). After several revisions to the powerplant by various manufacturers, ultimately landing in the control of the fabled Rolls-Royce organization, the Meteor was finally able to stretch her legs. the only air-to-air combat recorded for a single Meteor was an engagement with a German Focke-Wulf Fw 190, to which ended in a draw citing exterior circumstances. Beyond the war, the Meteor would go on to see combat in the Korean War at the hands of the Royal Australian Air Force against the Soviet-produced MiG-15 jet fighters. As time passed the Meteor by, the system reflected poorly in Korea as a jet-versus-jet competitor, thusly relegating the Meteor to more supplementary roles such as ground attack. Nevertheless, the Meteor broke new ground and became the mainstay of many an air force throughout the world. Royal Air Force Meteors were actually still in limited service as late as 1977, owing to the great legacy of the aircraft's design an flexibility of the airframe.
