James K Polk Campaign-1844 Stampless Cover
Item #: NEW-0015354

This is stampless cover with a faint red cancel from Rogersville Tennessee, dated July 12, 1844.  Addressed to William M Lowery, Post Master Esq Greeneville Tn with "free” written in pencil although it is not period writing. Signed by R G ? ( disclaimer-pencil writing says 1849 but Polk was dead before letter was written since he died on June 15, 1849  I thought it said 1829 but that does not fit either)  Use your own research and judgment.  Polk was the surprise winner for President in 1844. Folds and one tear.

See link https://books.google.com/books?id=UY6mGC_HGVIC&pg=PA611&lpg=PA611&dq=lowry+postmaster+greenville+tn&source=bl&ots=FPRbxhXNRR&sig=QzC9qgjYRyESUqn9HFrGCCGcysA&hl=en&sa=X&ei=-LvYVIq5DMmTyATKk4GgBA&ved=0CCUQ6AEwAQ#v=onepage&q=lowry%20postmaster%20greenville%20tn&f=false

Here is what I can make of the content:  Dear Lowery, We will make an effort to have a very large turn out for your mass meeting on the 8th August. We think we can safely count on 500 and we intend to make an effort for 1000.

Write me and let me know what distinguished speaker you calculate will be in attendance.  Will you be able to get any of consequence from ?   What free Democrats that are in that county ought to make a great effort to get their whig friends to turn out--.  Polk will in my opinion make a gain in every county in the whole state and I unhesitantly say,  ? ..certain for Polk and he will certainly be the next President.

If it is utterly impossible  for Johnston to attend the 3 appointments made for him in this county, you must send Millakin without fail, ( I can’t read the closing comment) Signed R G Fain

Item #: NEW-0014854

This booklet was published in 1969, compiled by Gilbert and Patricia Penny.  I have read this interesting booklet which contains information about other Southern states including Tennessee and Mississippi.  It is very informative regarding the trials of the postal carrier and the rough routes they had to travel.  It also shows the dedication of the the U S Government to move letters.  Postal carriers were exposed to great danger and hardships but were actually paid well for the time.  There are some illustrations of early Alabama covers and stamps.  Not paged but about 20 pages, front to back.

Kimball House-Atlanta Ga Cover-Historic Hotel
Item #: NEW-0014363

I can read the cancel on this cover which shows the first Kimball House, a famous house in Atlanta.  H.I. Kimball House was built by Horace Kimball.  S E Crittenden was the proprietor. I would estimate the date on this cover in the late 1870's.  Cut at the left edge and wear to the upper corner.  Clean back

Here is a brief history of this historic hotel.  A more complete history of the two Kimball Hotels can be found on this link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kimball_House_(Atlanta)

The Kimball House was the name of two historical hotels in Atlanta, Georgia. Both were constructed on an entire city block where the Atlanta Hotel had been before being burned in 1864 during the Civil War. Kimball began construction, promising to have the hotel complete by October 1870. Kimball hosted a dinner to celebrate the opening of the hotel on October 17 that year, although the structure was only two-thirds complete, and parts of the interior work would take the better part of a decade to be finished. four-story open-air lobby filed with plants, flowers, and a 12-foot-diameter  fountain. The House also boasted gas-light chandeliers, a central heating plant, a laundry, billiard hall, and 500 hotel rooms. It also had sixteen stores. It was the first building in Atlanta to have elevators and central heating. It was the host to many famous citizens and celebrities over the years.

A fire in 1883 completely destroyed the building. The second Kimball House was built in 1885 but was razed in 1959, the first of many historic buildings demolished in Atlanta during the 1960s and '70s, and replaced by a parking deck which still stands

Item #: NEW-0014360

This letterhead and cover are dated July 10th 1876.  It has had some moisture damage evidenced by some rippling on both items.  There is slight running of the ink on the letter. The cover has staining on the front and back.  This Wheeler & Wilson Manufacturing company is not a maker of sewing machines. According to my research on the web, this company in Savannah produced tobacco. According to this link: http://www.floridamemory.com/items/show/29289, the company was moved to Macon Georgia shortly after this letter was written due to the Yellow Fever epidemic in Savannah. The proprietor was W B Cleves and he wrote this letter in July of 1876 and the company was moved in September. I have been unable with my brief research to learn the history of the company when they moved to Macon.

Stevens Pottery Georgia-Cover
Item #: NEW-0014356

This cover from the Stevens Brothers in Stevens Pottery Ga was never mailed. See scan. This defunct plant has a very interesting history.  See the links below.  In summary, the town was after  Henry Stevens who had a saw mill and pottery there which for a time after the civil war was the largest industry in Baldwin County. The plant was burned by Sherman in 1864 but was rebuilt after the war.  In 1876 Stevens sold the plant to his sons.and they then only made brick, drains, sewer and water pipes, jugs and other such things.  The plant was closed in 1960 passing through others hands.

Canadian Cover-Brunswick House-Sackville Nova Scotia
Item #: NEW-0013620

I'm a sucker for graphic covers which show the building or the product the business offers.  I got so carried away with this one that I failed to note that it had a Canadian stamp so it doesn't fit in, through nice.  This sports a clear cancel from Sackville that reads April 25 00 which I can only surmise is 1900. The back bears a cancel from Halifax N S.   I tried to research this building.  What happened to the good old days when your search function took you to a site which had the nice yellow line that showed you where your quest was answered?  Now it takes you to a whole book and good luck finding out what you wanted to.  I was interested though to find out that in the early days Sackville was a temperance community.  I doubt that it still is, but it would sure be nice to have some of those communities now. Thomas Estabrooks was the proprietor of this hotel.
