Why England Slept-John F Kennedy-First Edition
Item #: NEW-0017208

I believe this to be a first edition.  It was published in New York in 1940 by Wilfred Funk. I bought this from a book seller who stated it was a first edition and my research has borne it out.  It is in poor condition with a damaged dust cover.  There is staining on the end pages but the interior pages are clean. There is a stamp on the interior pasted down blank page which indicated that it was "a gift of the People of the United States through the Victory Book Campaign A.L.A -ARC-U.S.O To the Armed forces of the Merchant Marine. Binding is true though the paper was worn off at the interior spine. The dust cover is a mess as can be seen in the scan. Priced at what I paid for it 20 years ago.

Why England Slept is the published version of a thesis written by John F. Kennedy while in his senior year at Harvard College. Its title was an allusion to Winston Churchill's 1938 book While England Slept, which also examined the buildup of German power.

Early Edition Winning of the West-Teddy Roosevelt
Item #: NEW-009010

This edition does not match the description of the first edition of this important work by Theodore Roosevelt but it was printed in the first year of publication which was 1899-G P Putnam's Sons The Knickerbocker Press. Signs of something being removed from the front. The book has been worked on as can be seen in the scans. It has also been re-strapped. Considerate wear to the tips of the boards. Clean interiors in Volume I and II. Volume three has a puncture mark which begins on the fly page and goes through page 12. This puncture mark is slightly bigger than the head of a pin. There are also a couple of pages with a chunk out of the edges. Some tears in the page of the final volume. Map in back of Volume 4, 2 maps in volume 2 and signs of removal of maps in back of Volume 3. Pox on everyone who removes maps and plates from books. This is still a handsome set.

Life of Andrew Jackson-Reid-Eaton-1817
Item #: TEN-003405

No paypal on this book but payment plans can be arranged.

This is the first edition of this important work begun by Reid and finished by Eaton. Published by Carey and Son in 1817. Complete title is The Life of Andrew Jackson, Major General in the Service of the United States comprising A History of The War in the South, from the Commencement of the Creek Campaign to the Termination of Hostilities Before New Orleans. All four maps are present. I have not unfolded but I spot one tear on the exterior of one.  Ink writing by previous owners on the inside cover, including that they had purchased it from a book dealer in Nashville. Calf leather and red leather title label with gold gilt which is original to the book. Calf is worn in places as might be expected. There is a split at the spine folds which is somewhat loose. Interior binding good. This is from my personal collection. At the time of this listing there was only one of this edition being offered by two different book services, one $6,000 + and the other $5,000+. That seems quite excessive to me but it does illustrate the rarity of this edition.

Great Locofoco Juggernaut
Item #: AME-000682

Great condition on this slim volume. Complete title is Great Locofoco Juggernaut, A New Console-a-tory Sub-Treasury Rag-Monster: A Cartoon Bank Note by D. C. Johnston. Publisher: Barre Imprint Society 1971.; Limited to 1950 numbered copies, this one not numbered. A biographical sketch of this 19th century American engraver with emphasis on a comic bank note. Loosely inserted is a copy of the engraved banknote. Binding is tall 8vo., cloth-backed marbled paper covered boards, paper cover label. 35, (3) pages. The bank note cartoon is beautifully engraved and is often sold as an original note. It's not even close to the original note which is made on very thin rag. This mock bank note, drawn by the artist David Claypoole Johnston (1799-1865), was issued in 1837 in response to the fiscal crisis associated with the United States Bank and the sub-treasury proposed by Martin Van Buren. Puns abound in the verse, and the president, his predecessor Andrew Jackson, and Vice President Richard M. Johnson (1780-1850) are skewered for policies that political conservatives, bankers, and businessmen blamed for the country's economic woes. Johnston depicts Van Buren in several places on the note. Near the top he is seen as a cat, sitting on a bag of bank deposits on top of the juggernaut being driven by Vice President Johnson. On the left he is shown as a monkey heading "to ruin" behind an ass with Andrew Jackson's face. And in the center he is being choked by a snake labeled "Treasury Circular." Critics believed that radical Democrats, called Locofocos, were steamrolling ahead with reckless fiscal policies and that the new sub-treasury would flood the economy with worthless paper currency known as "rags" or "shinplasters." Van Buren's opponents blamed him for following Jackson's fiscal policies and contended that working men, instead of being aided by the sub-treasury, would be crushed by the new "monster" while public officials and the wealthy would benefit.
