Mary Polk Branch-A Genealogical Record and Annals Of My Past
Item #: NEW-0016220

This is an extremely rare little book.  I have looked on line over the years and have never found another example.   Mary Polk Branch was born into a very famous Tennessee family as was her husband into a famous North Carolina family. William Polk. Mary's father, had several famous brothers including General Lucius Polk, and General Leonidas Polk. Two famous homes, still existing, are associated with the family-"Rattle and Snap" won by Mrs. Branch's Grandfather in a game of chance and "Hamilton Place", built by her Grandfather. Mrs. Polk wrote another memoir, titled MEMOIRS OF A SOUTHERN WOMAN "WITHIN THE LINES" which is also scarce, though has been reprinted.

This is a thin book with only 24 pages.  There is Genealogical Record of the Polk Family with some pencil markings by Gerald Branch. She gives a history of her family and tells of family events as well as  her husband's participation in supporting the Confederacy.  Her husband was Joseph Branch was the brother of General Lawrence Branch who was killed during the war.  The book was published in 1905 by her husband.  The book's cover is grimy and the back cover appears to have some moisture damage at the top.

Ron Allen was the chronicle of rare Tennessee books and ephemera. This book is a must have for the serious Tennessee book collector.  This one I consider to be his most complete and also has a price guide, although that probably could not be considered accurate.  This is a large format book which was published privately by the author in 2003, Knoxville Tennessee.   There are some pencil notations made by me throughout the book. Memoir Hugh Lawson White-Ed Nancy N Scott-1856
Item #: NEW-0015824

This book is listed in Howes, which gives it a ranking of importance. However, is not in demand, which is just as well as you can't find it anyway.   That is to say it is rare.  Pencil markings by a previous owner who writes that he bought it at auction on Dec. first Monday in 1892. Other random pencil writings.  Fairly large water stain which begins opposite Hugh White's engraved portrait which runs through six pages.  Later the stain becomes faint and blends in with the toning on the pages.  The toning is strong on some pages, moderate on others and light on others. The binding is tight with some wear to the spine, including a small area where the board has eroded.  Someone took shoe polish to the covers, maybe me.  I bought this book a long time ago.  Here is the information found about the book on the web. http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=W000376

Hugh Lawson WhiteWHITE, Hugh Lawson, a Senator from Tennessee; born in Iredell County, N.C., October 30, 1773; moved with his parents in 1785 to that part of North Carolina which now is Knox County, Tenn.; participated in an expedition against the Cherokees around 1793; pursued classical studies in Philadelphia, Pa., and studied law in Lancaster, Pa.; admitted to the bar in 1796 and commenced practice in Knoxville, Tenn.; judge of the State superior court 1801-1807; member, State senate 1807-1809; appointed United States district attorney in 1808; judge of the State supreme court 1809-1815; president of the State bank; member, State senate 1817-1825; elected in 1825 as a Jacksonian to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Andrew Jackson; reelected in 1829 and then in 1835 as an Anti-Jacksonian (later Whig) and served from October 28, 1825, to January 13, 1840, when he resigned because he could not conscientiously obey the instructions of his constituents; served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Twenty-second and Twenty-third Congresses; chairman, Committee on Indian Affairs (Twentieth through Twenty-sixth Congresses); died in Knoxville, Tenn., April 10, 1840; interment in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Statue Laws of Tennessee-1831-John Haywood
Item #: NEW-0015823

This is an early Compilation of Tennessee State Laws by John Haywood and Robert Cobbs. The Statute Laws of the State of Tennessee, Of a Public and General Nature: Revised and Digested by Order of the General Assembly. Knoxville: F. S. Heiskell, 1831.  This is volume I of 2 volumes. The scans show the condition of the exterior of this rare book which is sound and complete except for end papers on the back.  There is a split on the front blank end paper, not affecting the binding. There is three inks signatures of previous owners.  Wm Armstrong , G Bartheu, and I can't read the last on. Next end paper has some inked markings as well.  One blank end paper was torn out. Title page is clean other than a water stain at bottom and some foxing. Some of the pages are heavily toned and others less so.  Back end papers missing, pencil marking and some soot in the crease.

The scans are lighter than the appearance of the book. The strip on the third scan is on the bottom not the top.

History of Tennessee-Tennesseans- Hale-Merritt
Item #: NEW-0011515

This is an eight volume set that was published in 1913.  I sort of hate to offer it as it has information on Tennesseans that cannot be found anywhere else.  There are beautiful illustrations of some of the people featured.  Some are photographs and other beautiful engravings, most covering the whole page.  The first few volumes covers the history of Tennessee and the remaining volumes have the sketches of prominent Tennesseans of the day, most now forgotten.  One volume is quite faded and evidently was purchased to complete a set.  It is pretty uncommon to find a complete set. I'm not going to cover the condition as this is a reference set.  The covers vary in the degree of mottling which is the most prominent condition problem. Ignore the shipping expense on the invoice as I will adjust it to the actual charges.
