Scarce title published by the Louisiana State University Press as part of their important Southern Biography Series. This is a review copy, it's stamp on the fly page. Also is a little slip of paper which indicates that LSU Press is presenting it as a review copy. The author is Francis Butler Simkins and publishing date is 1944. Scan shows the condition of the dust cover. Ignore the reflections caused by the scan. Note the white area in the upper spine which is a missing area. Also note the staining on the spine. There is a long light water stain on the back cover at the top. Evidently this book was exposed to some time of moisture as the stain extends through the index. Rest of the interior is clean. Boards are presentable with only light shelf wear to the spines and a corner crease There are two offensive stamps of a previous owner- one on the back of the front cover and the other is on the opposing page. Shape Note Tune Book-The Missouri Harmony
Item #: NEW-007033
|

I had been unable to identify the title and edition date of this Sacred Harp songster until recently when a very knowledgeable person furnished this information:
"The shape note book you have is The Missouri Harmony, compiled by Allen D. Carden. It looks as if your copy begins on p. 7? Assuming the inscribed date was actually written in 1822, it could only be the first edition (Cincinnati: Morgan and Lodge, 1820). All subsequent editions (and there are many) are later, 1824-1848 or so. It has been reprinted once or twice more, at least as recently as 2005.
Leather bound book, measuring 9 by 5 and a half inches. Period hand writing on the inside cover has the name of the owner which I can't quite read and October 23rd 1822-Montgomery County Tennessee. The title page is missing as well as some ensuing pages. It is probable that there is also text missing in the back of the book. There seems to be 200 pages in the book. The last page has two hymns, Portugal and Pleyel's Hymn. Some pages are loose and other pages has some loss of text. All these things would be unforgivable but for the rarity and revival of popularity of this unique manner of singing.

Poems and Compositions In Prose-Munford
Item #: NEW-004133

|
Rare colonial imprint titled, Poems and Compositions In Prose on Several Occasions by William Munford, of the county of Mecklenburg and State of Virginia, Richmond, printed by Samuel Pleasants, June 1798. One back fly page missing, which followed one errata page. Rare book and especially in the original boards. Boards are heavily stained, and damaged at the top of the spine where the leather is missing. Some splits in the spine but still bound together. As is often the case in these old books, the blank pages have been used for practicing handwriting and various and sundry scribbling, all in ink. These ink renderings cover the entire surface of the pages. Light toning of the rag pages.
Here is some information found on the internet: William Munford was born in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, on August 15, 1775. His father, Robert Munford, was also a literary man. The young Munford attended William and Mary at twelve years of age and was befriended by George Wythe, a professor law, and John Randolph.
"A lawyer of Richmond, Virginia, who beside several volumes of Law Reports, published a volume of Poems (1798) and a scholarly blank-verse translation of the Iliad." [Oscar Fay Adams, A Dictionary of American Authors 265 (Boston: Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1899)]

History of Winnebago County Wisconsin-Richard Harney-1880

|
This book was published by Oshkosh Allen & Hicks 1880 Original binding 3/4 gilt-ruled black morocco over pebbled brown cloth, spine and front cover has gilt lettering. There are numerous beautiful lithographic plates of buildings and scenery in the county. Complete title is History of Winnebago County Wisconsin, and Early History of the Northwest. 349 pages with ads in the back. The plates are beautiful and suitable for framing not that I would recommend tearing this beautiful book up. Spine looks pretty good until you get to the bottom edge which has part of the spine worn down. This extends to the front of the leather strip at the bottom. It looks like some mouse got to work on it or possibly a dog, like mine, who considers leather books a delicacy. Wear to the corners which are reinforced with leather. Part of the leather torn off at bottom corner. You can see both of these defects in the scan.
Binding is quite tight. This was a presentation copy to the Wisconsin Fishing Party of Nashville by Mr. and Mrs Lon Granger of the Menasha Wisconsin, December 27th 1880.

This is one of Lee Smith's more scarce and desirable books. Printed by G P Putnam's Sons New York. The last date mentioned is 1981. Since no further listings are cited, this would be considered a First Edition. There are earlier copyright dates however this is due to the fact that nine of the stories in this book appeared in magazines. Putnam's policy on books printed before 1983 are first editions, if no further dates are noted. Beige cloth boards with a green spine. Dust cover is present with very minor shelf wear. There is some rubbing on the covers however, not noticeable unless you rotate the book. I believe this is characteristic of this book

Two volumes of The Far West or A Tour Beyond the Mountains. Important book listed in Howes. Published by Harper & Brothers in 1838. Paper label is missing on one and too faint to read on another. Original boards which are course pretty rough looking but still bound together. Ink owner's names and pencil scribblings on the inside with corner torn off on one fly page. Foxing in the interior pages very mild. The owner wrote his initials in ink on the top part of the spine of both books. The spine of course has extensive shelf wear to them. These books were owned by early Nashville pioneer, Edward Hicks, of Devon Farms, a historic home and now the home of Ensworth school. Edward Hicks presented them to his son, Edward Hicks, Jr. a Confederate Officer and nephew of General Zollicoffer. Book was written by Edmund Wilkes, an Ohio journalist of his extensive travels in Missouri and Illinois, which would have been considered the Far West in those early days of our history.
