This first edition book was written by John Watson Morton, "The Artillery of Nathan Bedford Forrest's Cavalry", "The Wizard of the Saddle". Published in Nashville Tenn, Dallas Tex. M E Church, South-1909. The scans tell the story of the condition of the boards. You will note the fading of the gold gilt on the author's name on the front cover. The lettering is completely faded on the spine, dark at the bottom and split at the top. There is a great deal of writing on the front as can be seen in the last scan. The author's grandson has inscribed the book to a previous owner and more writing by other owners. There is a split down the title page where the portrait of Morton is and some scattered spotting. The rest of the book is completely bound and the interior pages are much better than might be expected in a book that has traveled through so many owners.

I have never seen this book in good condition and this one has multiple problems. So there will be no surprises I have provided many scans. As can be seen in the scan the brown end page is missing. The binding is split in the front but binding is intact. The board is textured cloth and the front board is split at the bottom and is two inches long. Extreme wear to the tips of the board. The closed pages have foxing and there are moisture stains to varying degrees throughout the book. There is some moderate foxing on some of the pages.

This first edition book was published in 1906 by Moffat, Yard and Company in New York. John W Munson is the author. See the scans to view the appearance. There is some shelf wear on the top and bottom of the spine which appears as crumpling. There is some wear also to the corner tips of the boards The scan shows the appearance of the front blank page, which has some age toning. I believe the toning which is also on the back pages must have been due to a paper dust cover. There are also several pencil notations of former price ad a ball point pen library number. There is an oval stamp on the title page which reads M.C.M. Association Library and the same notation in ink of the library numbers. There are no other library markings. Binding is tight and the interior pages are clean.

The publisher of this Fourteen Hundred Day in the Confederate Army book was from McCowat-Mercer Press, 1954. Edition Limited to 1000 Copies., This Journal has long been recognized in Confederate history as probably the most unique book in the entire field of soldier narratives. It is a day-by-day record of a Texas private who served both in the Trans-Mississippi Department and the Army of Tennessee.
Please view the scans to see this very unusual book which is a copy of the hand printed, written account by W W Heartsill of his experiences day by day from April 19h, 1861 to May 20,1865. He was with the W P Lane Rangers. The original printed journal belongs to the Tennessee Historical Society. This publication was edited by Bell Irvin Wiley. Only thirteen copies of the original printing are known.
There are some condition problems, the most worrisome to me is the stains on the page edges which I am concerned might be rodent staining. There is the beginning of some gnawing on the closed pages in the back but must have been rescued before it got more damage. Ink signature of the previous owner and his ink stamped name and address along with a Confederate Ink Seal. Inked price as well. Note the heavy staining or foxing on the edges of the dust cover.
