This is a very rare Presidential Campaign bandana picturing Grover Cleveland, his running mate Allen Thurman, and Robert Taylor of Tennessee running for Governor of Tennessee. This is the only example of a coattail bandana that I have ever seen though there may be more. Very few examples of this bandana are known, possibly no more than two or three and they sold in the $2,500. range. Robert Taylor ran in a famous campaign, known as the War of Roses, in which his opponent was his own brother, Alfred Taylor. Supporters of Robert wore white roses and Alfred's supporters wore red roses. The brothers traveled together and at the campaign stops played their fiddles and regaled the crowd with funny stories. Robert won the election along with another term and also served in the U S Senate from 1907 to 1912. His Republican brother became Governor in his own right in 1921 and was defeated in his attempt to serve another term.
The bandana is in excellent condition with the exception of a few brown spots and folds. The sizing is still present and the colors vivid. This bandana was produced by a Nashville business-a clothing store-J S Reeves and company.
