Thuss Photograph-Nashville
Item #: NEW-0015643

This is a mounted albumen by prominent Nashville photographer.  It is on the full board but it wouldn't fit in the scan and am having trouble with my camera.  On the right hand side behind the wagon is the old Court House. I can't quite read the wording on the wagon but it looks like a milk wagon. The structure in the middle is the Berry, Demoville and Co building.  That building is still there. I've been informed that the building on the front left was the City Hotel.

The Berry Demoville company was a wholesale drug company.  The building was used by the Union Army during the occupation of Nashville and was known as hospital #3.

Please view the scan to see the condition and appearance of this mounted albumen.  Wear to the board, which measures 8 1/2 by 7 inches. There is writing on the back which I'm going to try to read.  G E Barth, Prescott Arizona.  Google search turned up a G E Garth, railroad engineer from Prescott Arizona.  He was referred to as a hero but I could not access the newspaper archives without paying.  " G. E. Barth, formerly a locomotive engineer hero for many years"  I gather it involved a serious train wreck or near wreck.

Item #: NEW-0012341

This photo including the mount measures 12 by 10 inches.  There is no damage to the mount which is not shown in entirety in the scan.  Great clarity.  There is also a  real photo postcard which came with this photograph.  It has been cut down but it has a nice parade scene which no doubt the Loyalhanna Brewery participated in.  Signage in the postcard for the Pittsburg Brewery Lathrone Brewery.

Here is some information taken from the web about this company which closed it's doors in 1920.  The photograph has the date 1907 written on the board.

The Loyalhanna Brewery was established in 1901.  In 1906 it became part of the Independent Brewing Co of Pittsburgh until 1920.  When Prohibition went into effect in 1920 the Brewery had to switch of a weaker brew and turned to ice making.  The business was discontinued in the early 1920's.

Great photograph with a mark of the T E Healy Collection.  The photo is light but has great  clarity.  Bottom corner crease leaving a weakened corner. This great Queen Anne style building's architect was William Schickel who designed the building in 1879.  It suffered two devestating fires over the years and the Century Magazine moved in 1915.  Laying vacant for years the historical landmark was renovated by the Barnes and Noble Company which is the current resident.

The Century magazine was the successor to Scribner's and was very popular in the Nineteenth  century.  It was in operation from 1881 to 1930.

Two mounted albumens showing the Wards building and a composite Thuss photograph of the 1902, probably the Senior Class.  Wards Seminary has a rich Nashville history as it later became Ward Belmont and finally Belmont College.

The composite measures 9+ by 7+, more of course with the board. Here are the names in the photograph, Maude Stebbins, Secretary-Treasusrer, Lelia Jones, Dannie Young, Ruby Fowler, Lyda Jackson, Leslie Latta, Gray Gatlin, President, Daisy D Smith, Lucy Pierson, Vice President, Emma Walker, and Lulu Tubb.  Some age spots on the photo and damage to the board which can be seen in the latter scan. Photographer mark of Thuss, Nashville Tennessee.

The second photograph shows the Wards building.  In case you do not recognize the building, there is a visible sign which says Wards.  There is a brown stain which should be visible in the scan and other scattered brown spots.  The photo measures nine and a half by seven and a half inches. This photograph was taken at the time of the Tennessee Centennial Exposition by Thuss. Pencil notation on the back reads, 2nd Avenue North, 200 Block Toward Broad. There is also wear to the boards. Sign for Brandon Printing Company, which is the building on the right. Partial signs for Gray and Dudley, a harness co, a bicycle and sportings good store, a stove and tinwear business, and another with only partial words that can be seen.
