CDV-The Two Headed Boy
Item #: NEW-004299

This is a curiosity. This CDV is from the 70's or 80's with a back mark of John M Clarke Photographer in New Orleans. The back is stamped "George Roehn, The 2 Headed Boy, Five Years Old." His name is also on the front. Clearly, he does not have two heads. He is holding a riding crop. Could be post operation. Needs further research.

This follow up information was furnished to me:

George Roehn was born with myelomeningocele, a variant of spinal bifida. Spina bifida, or split spine is a fault in the development of the spine and spinal cord which leaves a gap in the spine. Myelomeningocele spina bifida causes the spinal column to remain open allowing the membranes and spinal cord push out to create a sac in the lower spine. Hence, the 2nd. head not showing in the CDV.

During the 1880's George was on display at many circus events in the Midwest including J Taylor's Circus & Menagerie of Creston, Iowa. George had the "2nd head" surgically removed in 1887.
Atlanta Constitution April 23, 1887 - Dr. Willis Wesimoreland exhibited the' two headed boy George Rehn of Ohio upon whom the doctor operated several months ago. Several months ago Dr. Westmoreland cut off the head at the lower end of the spine.
