Half Plate Daguerreotype Family-Full Case
Item #: NEW-0014622

Wear to the case but it is intact.  Someone has worked on the case which is worn and the shoe polish or whatever is uneven. Someone has inquired as to whether or not it might be a post mortem.  I think it is just a sleeping child but feel to correct me if I'm wrong.  This to me is what is fun about photos that are not documented, you can have fun speculating about it.

Half Plate Daguerreotype-Two Young Men-Occupational
Item #: NEW-0013052

As with most half plate dags, the case has become detached.     The clarity is very good and the tinting adds to the attraction.  There are condition problems however, the most distracting being scattered spotting throughout the entire surface.  Will send a high resolution scan upon request as my web site can't handle it.

Rare George Washington Thermoplastic Case (Repaired)
Item #: NEW-0011525

Hard to find case which also happens to have a fairly decent daguerreotype in it.  However, after I bought it I soon discovered that it was split on the left right hand edge all the way down.  It had previously been repaired but came apart when I took the original ambro out of it.  I have re-glued it and am hoping that it will hold as it still presents well except for the split down the edge and a small tip chip on the back. See scans..

Dags are rare to find in a brooch setting and this is handsome young man to boot.  There are scratches on the crystal but I don't believe on the dag. I don't know if that can be polished off or not. There is slight solarization on the left side.  Locket measures one a half inches by one and a quarter inch.

The velvet pillow is somewhat loose and the image is quite loose caused by the loss of half of the velvet border. Corner chips and some bites. Case does not snap closed. Handsome Gentleman- Dag-Oval Case
Item #: NEW-008368

I started not to list this since both the dag and the thermoplastic case have condition problems, however, this image was culled from the Herb Peck collection and the man is identified in the back. "T H Chapman Sr father of T H Jr. grandfather of W D Chapman." Large brown stain on the dag which might be able to be removed by a professional. Case has some cracks along the edges but is still intact.

Item #: NEW-008139

Nice leather case with a poorly repaired spine and some general wear. The preserver is missing but the cover glass holds the mat and image in place. Good clarity of a handsome young couple who appear to be looking at an album. The condition problems are readily evident in the scan and the spotting is on the image and not the glass.

Dag-Mop Case-Little Girl Holding Photo Case
Item #: NEW-007937

Nice sixth plate daguerreotype of a precious little girl holding onto a photograph case. The case is sealed, but it looks like a later seal placed on top of the old one. Solarization is present in the ring around the image. The mat is marked E. H. McKenney, Biddeford (Maine). I don't see any scratches but there are a couple of brown spots on her arm just below the sleeve. The mother of pearl case has crazing and the paint has almost worn off. The spine is torn at the top about a third of the way down but is still intact. Chip out of bottom right hand corner. The clasp still works.

Please views the scans to see the condition of this nice daguerreotype of a young boy whose arm is resting on a book. Nice clarity and contrast. Case has a repaired spine. Sixth Plate Daguerreotype in Rare Case
Item #: NEW-007490

Interesting dag with excellent clarity. If you can read backwards you could read the title of the book the subject's arm in leaning on. The image is encased in a rare thermoplastic double case. Some bites to the corner tips and chip just under the clasp which prevents the case from being closed. The case is titled "Sir Henry Havelock" and is listed as rare. See scan to view the condition of this image which I would describe as good.

Album style Mother of Pearl, painted case. Unfortunately it is split at the spine and I doubt if this can be repaired. Attractive young man who is wearing what looks like a fraternity pin, possibly Sigma Chi but it has been gilded so you really can't tell. The name of the photographer has been cut out of something and is enclosed under the glass. "Gage, Artist, St Johnsbury Vt."

Mary Polk (Branch)-Joseph G Branch-Daguerreotype
Item #: AME-000219

Pay pal will not be accepted on this item although payment plans will be accepted.

This is an extremely rare grouping including a previously unknown half plate daguerreotype of Mary Polk Branch and her husband Joseph G. Branch taken shortly after their marriage and before the Civil War. The case is not original to the image which had none. Great clarity which can not seen in the scan, which has a typical halo effect around the image. There is a swipe across the top of the dag and other scattered minor marks.  In the second book penned by Mary Polk Branch, "Memoirs of a Southern Woman..." Mary makes reference to the photograph of her husband which she no longer has. My speculation is that the wedding day dag was sent to a member of the Branch family. (more on this later) The book is available in a separate listing but a copy will be furnished with this lot.

Mary Polk Branch was born into a very famous Tennessee family as was her husband into a famous North Carolina family. William Polk. Mary's father, had several famous brothers including General Lucius Polk, and General Leonidas Polk. Two famous homes, still existing, are associated with the family-"Rattle and Snap" won by Mrs. Branch's Grandfather in a game of chance and "Hamilton Place", built by her Grandfather. Mrs. Polk wrote a lovely memoir, titled MEMOIRS OF A SOUTHERN WOMAN "WITHIN THE LINES" AND A GENEALOGICAL RECORD and a rarer book, "A Genealogical Record and Annals of My Past" dated 1905. This book has a picture of Mary Polk Branch though she is quite old.

Mary married Joseph G. Branch who was the brother of Confederate General Lawrence Branch, who was killed in the war. Included in the listing  is a painting on ivory of Branch, whose name is written on the back. Artist unknown. These two items, along with others were found in a family estate in Nashville, descendants of Gerald Branch Howard, who at one time served as Chairman of the Polk Genealogical Committee.
