1909-Postcard-Folder-Period Views of Oklahoma Indians-More
Item #: NEW-0012755
|
|
I couldn't resist buying this accordion style folder containing such interesting views of Indians. There are condition problems as can been seen in the scan. There are three separations and a tear and edge wear to Geronimo. Copyright was 1907 by Joe B Baker, Lawton Oklahoma. The postmark is 1909 from Myrtle Shelby Snyder Oklahoma to Florence Shelby in Waterloo Alabama.
The title of the folder is "And Other Indians as I saw them". Titles of the views are: 1. Geronimo, Famous Apache War Chief, 2. Kiowa Anna dressed in a suit with 500 Elk Teeth, 3. Gotebo, Chief of Kiowas, 4. Quannah Parker, Chief of Comanches and his two squaws, 5. Sophia Fisher, whose father was a white man, captured in Texas at nine years of age by the Comanches, 6. Jack and Post Oak Jim, Comanches, 7. Gertrude Tahquache and Polly Pahkewah, Comanches who sing in their native tongue at the Indians Schools near Lawton, 8. Hot Coffe and His Squaw, Meheshah, 9. Bernice Quassyah and Lybie Mehesyah, Commances, attending the Indian School near Lawton, 9. Clark Chenke, Comanche Indian Police, 10. Horse, Kiowa Indian Police, and 11. Convenient Mode of Transportation for a baby. I have not shown all of the views in the scans.
A letter was written on the back of the view which contains this interesting content. "Boys you ought to come out here and see these Indians. They dress like these pictures. The Indians in Eastern Okla are more civilized than they are here. There is a government reservation a few miles from here and the soldiers often come here in their uniforms. The fort is a very pretty place. The first Indian...here was a prisoner of war for 20years. They kept him at the fort. He died this summer.
Viewing these fascinating pictures is a reminder of what a rich civilization that the Indians actually had before we set out to "civilize them" and move them out of their lands.

1906 Real Photo PC-Dog Looking at Christmas Tree
Item #: NEW-0011451
|
|
Never mailed but 1906 copyright date and an undivided back. Bowed but will be flat in the holder. I had to laugh when I saw this card with the dog dressed in a silly gown and looking at a rather pathetic Xmas tree. The silver in the photo process had given it a dull shiny appearance. There are also several vertical lines running through the tree. No creases on the back so I think they are just splits in the photo. Does not detract very much.

Can't quite read the cancel on this early card with condition problems. Multiple creases and image turned up at bottom right hand edge. The scene is so interesting that I didn't notice the problems and evidently the dealer who priced it didn't either. The large assembled crowd is watching a guy standing on his head on the bicycle seat. This would be a rather tame stunt in today's world. Selling for what I paid for it.

Super Rare 1909 PC-Lynnville Tennessee
Item #: NEW-007458

I had never heard of Lynnville Tennessee so goggling it I learned that the last census was 300 people. Evidently it was a growing town until the Civil War when the Union army occupied the town and burnt most of the homes and buildings. This card has some defects which I did not notice until I looked at it under a light and rotating it. Of course some wear to the corners and edges with minor flaking off of the image. Light corner crease on bottom left and a large vertical crease which extends down two thirds of the card. The scene is Main Street and card was published by R W Waldrop Druggist. Postally used with partial Lynnville cancel and Bardwell Texas cancel.
