Brown's Hotel-Macon Ga- Letter-Alexander Stephens
Item #: NEW-0016061

This is a one page letter from 1872 which continues on the back.  "A Looker On" is taking Alexander H Stephens, to whom the letter is written to task.  He questions whether Stephens is a Republican since "You gloat over the defeat of Greeley..." "I believe you have been bought by the Grant party." and more along this line.  He is referring to comments that Stephens had made in the Atlanta Daily Herald."

The beautiful graphic shows the first Brown's Hotel which burned in 1878.  The history of the two hotels is given in this link:

http://www.whatwasthere.com/browse.aspx#!/ll/32.8320922851563,-83.6281127929688/id/8926/info/details/zoom/14/

The Brown House, built in 1856, was one of many grand hotels in Macon and was conveniently located at Fourth and Plum Streets across the street from the Union Railway passenger terminal. The Brown House burned twice, strangely on the same date 43 years apart, once in 1878 and again in 1921. This 1894 photograph shows the second Brown house, which was not rebuilt after the second fire. The WGXA-TV station occupies the site today.
