Fort Hawkins Rye Whiskey Bottle-Macon Ga
Item #: NEW-0015843

This is a rare and only known specimen of this great bottle.  Measures 8 and 1/4 by 4 inches. Mold marks, acid etching, light purple tone.  It is cloudy, has some small bubbles and a chip out of the band. A customer of mine has labeled this bottle a strap side slug plate flask.

Paypal may not be used on this item, though payment plans can be arranged.

I was lucky to pick up this great whiskey bottle as the local collectors in Macon believed it to be a fantasy item, evidently because none of the bottle diggers had found another specimen.  I’m not a bottle digger but have developed a small collection of jugs and bottles and  I have a good eye, if I do say so.  This bottle was first introduced on the Vintage Macon Georgia Facebook by a woman who had found it in the rubble of a building which belonged to her family.  It was greeted with great enthusiasm, including some comments which were removed due to offers to buy, which is not allowed on the site.  You can read this thread by using the search function-Fort Hawkins.  The thread contains some useful information by two of the members which proves that such a brand existed.

I bought the bottle at a local antique store and though I feared it might be a fantasy item, I purchased it.  Later, I took it to the local flea market to show it to someone, who is recognized as a great picker and someone who knows about many things.  It turned out that he had seen the Facebook postings and he and the other Macon collectors had declared it bogus.  We argued a bit with him telling me why he felt that way, basically due to the fact that none of the diggers had found such a bottle.  He did give me the useful information of the Facebook posting so I was able to contact the original owner.  I will provide our interaction to the buyer but the following is the provenience:

"I found the bottle among some rubble in an old warehouse.  The warehouse was originally Macon Grocery built in the late 1800‘s located on the corner of Seventh St. and Mulberry.  The section of the warehouse where I found it was the old stable area where the houses that pulled the carts thru town were kept... (more info which will be provided)  My father owned this building and I sold it several months ago at an estate auction.  I put the bottle in the tag sale.”  She went on the say she didn’t price it and did not know what it sold for.

I was told  that the owner of the antique booth had bought it for her bottle collector boyfriend who decided it was a fantasy piece.   Because I’m stubborn and had a good feeling about it, I took it to the Civil War show in Dalton, where I knew I could show it to several bottle collectors.  I showed it to three people, two of the top Tennessee bottle collectors who declared it to be genuine.  To put the cherry on the top, I showed it to Johnny Mack Nickels, a life long Maconite and recognised as an expert on all things Macon.  Johnny Mack said it was definitely a 1880's period bottle with acid etching by a skillful partisan of the period.

The picture of the bottle on Facebook is better than mine as I had to use my scanner due to problems uploading from my camera.

George Wiedemann Brewing Co-Newport Ky-1894
Item #: NEW-0012189

Nice graphics of this small lettersheet which was actually mailed from Jacksonville Florida.  Here is some information found on the web about Wiedemann:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

George Wiedemann Sr. was born in Eisenach, Germany, in 1833, Wiedemann came to the United States as a young man in  1855. He moved to Newport, Kentucky in 1870. He was the founder of the George Wiedemenn Brewing Company, which became Kentucky's largest brewery. It was located at 601 Columbia Street in Newport, Kentucky. Wiedemann beer was synonymous with Newport. Wiedemann promoted itself as "America's only registered beer" and often used humorous radio commercials as part of its advertising campaigns.

Wiedemann married Agnes Rohman and they had six children. Newspaper accounts described Wiedemann as an honest man with a natural sociability and a dignified businessman.

On May 28, 1890, George Wiedemann became ill and died at his home at 188 East Third St in Newport. The business was continued to operate by his sons, George Jr. and Charles.

Wiedemann Brewing was merged with G. Heileman Brewing Company, in 1967 and was operated as Wiedemann Division, G. Heileman Brewing Company, Inc. The primary brands were Wiedemann Fine Beer, Royal Amber Beer, Blatz Beer/Cream Ale and other assorted Heileman labels. The brewery was closed in 1983

This came along with some marbles I bought.  I don't need these right now but could have used them in the past.  Some are damaged.  The large one on the left has a bunged up bottom where it has chipped.  Could be smoothed out and still leave plenty of length.  The next one also has some large chips out of the bottom.  The large rounded one has a marble stuck in it.  The bottom left has a large chip on the bottom.  The green top has a chip on the bottom. It is probably off of a pharmacy bottle.  Both of the small round stoppers have chips out of the bottom.

Ryan and Kennedy Bottle-Pittsburgh Pennsylvania
Item #: NEW-0010132

Blob top bottle labeled Ryan and Kennedy.  There is an embossed mark on the bottom which indicates it was made by Cunningham & Ihmsen bottle blowers and makers in Pittsburgh that was in operation under that name between 1865-1878.  Imperfections that are to be expected in a dug state. There are some wavy lines in the top but they may have been in the original bottle.  I don't see any chips.  There is one line going down one side.  I'm describing it the best I can, not being an expert on bottles. .  My best guess is that it is a soda bottle.  It is ten and a half inches tall and twelve inches in diameter.

Nice graphics on this bill head from A and N M Block in Macon Georgia who were agents for the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company in Cincinnati Ohio. See scan to view the condition problems which includes a torn bottom corner and a coffee or water stain.

Here is a capsule of this famous company's history

Christian Moerlein was a Bavarian immigrant born in Truppach, Bavaria, in 1818.He traveled to America in 1841 after becoming an apprentice brewer and blacksmith. He settled in the neighborhood of Cincinnati Ohio known as Over-the-Rhine, a heavily populated neighborhood of mostly Germans and German-Americans. In 1853, Moerlein opened the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company.

In its first year of production, the Christian Moerlein Brewing Company produced 1,000 barrels of beer. Just over a decade later, 26,000 barrels were being produced annually. When production reached its peak, Christian Moerlein beer was being shipped to places as far as Europe and South America and was the only Cincinnati beer exported internationally. Moerlein died in 1897, but the company continued until Prohibition began. The company never recovered from Prohibition, and the brewery sat idle until the brand was reintroduced in 1981 by the Hudepohl Brewing Company.
