Atlanta Cotton Exposition Lot-1895-Governor's Foot Guard-Hartford
Item #: NEW-0013717

This is a two item lot which are souvenirs from the Atlanta Cotton States Exposition held in 1895.  The ribbon would have been worn by someone who was with the Governor's Foot Guard which was founded in 1771 in Hartford Connecticut.  Note the heavy stain on the left bottom edge and some scattered stains on the right.  Lighter stain above the heavy stain. One pinhole above the letter A in Hartford.  The medal at the top looks like it was just stuck on but it is also from the Governor's Foot Guard which was a State military organization

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton_States_and_International_Exposition

The 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition was held at the current Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Nearly 800,000 visitors attended the event. The exposition was designed to promote the region to the world and showcase products and new technologies as well as to encourage trade with Latin America. The Cotton States and International Exposition featured exhibits from several states including various innovations in agriculture and technology. President Grover Cleveland presided over the opening of the exposition. But the event is best remembered for the both hailed and criticized "Atlanta Compromise" speech given by Booker T. Washington on September 18, promoting racial cooperation.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governor's_Foot_Guard

The First Company Governorís Foot Guard was organized in Hartford in October 1771 as the Connecticut Governor's Guard, and is the oldest military organization in continuous existence in the United States. Although other organizations may have been formed at an earlier date, the First Company is unique in its record of unbroken service.

Ribbon-New Orleans-World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition
Item #: NEW-0011784

Nice scarce souvenir from the ill-fated New Orleans World's Fair.  The fringe in missing on the bottom and some one has added in pencil a date at the top of the ribbon.  Nice overall appearance but the biggest condition problem is the separation in the fold at the middle.  At present it is only halfway but clearly it is fragile.  Features President Grover Cleveland. Measures ten and a half inches long.  This exposition was riddled with scandals and the state treasurer absconded with a great deal of the money.

Item #: NEW-0011605

It would be hard to find a nicer copy of this view book of lithographs, including many in color of this exposition. The only problem I can note is that some of the color lithographic scenes produced some staining on the opposite pages. I have shown the page most affected, the others are quite moderate.
