Garfield Assassination Lot
Item #: NEW-0013737

Charles Guiteau did not realize his hopes of becoming a hero by assassinating President James Garfield.  This delicate paper item measures 8 by 8 inches and is on newsprint.  It looks like a stand alone piece of ephemera and was not  taken from a newspaper. There is some chipping at the bottom and loss of part of the bottom left hand edge.  Staining at the folds which can be seen in the scan.  I have not taken it out of the holder and don't plan to handle it.  It's pretty miraculous that this item still exists as I imagine may have used it as a bulls-eye.

Also included in the listing but purchased separately is a period newspaper, a double sheet rag newspaper, almost entirely devoted to the assassin of  President James Garfield.  The paper is The Telegraph, Buffalo New York, dated June 30-1882.  The paper is not dark as it appears in the scan. though toned, and it  covers Guiteau's life and career. There is a huge engraving of the hanging scene.  There is damage to the paper with a long separation at the mid fold which goes to the beginning of the graphic but other holes and small tears in this fold that ends at the first horizontal fold.  A couple of other pin holes, not worth mentioning. There are heavy creases on the bottom right hand corner which can be seen in the scan. Also a very small burn hole on the first news column.

Cold Water Army-Temperance-Circular
Item #: NEW-0013041

Strangely this blue rag item is not dated but is clearly from the 1850's.  This circular was from the Grand Council Cold Water Army of America. The circular advertises a "beautiful picture" of the Hon. J Belton O-Neall, Most Worthy Patriarch of the Sons of Temperance" whose hand is resting on the Temperance Pledge.  To the left of him "stands Hon Neal Dow, holding in his hands THE MAINE LIQUOR LAW. Following that is a long list of names of men who support the movement including many famous men who are also portrayed in an engraving of "The celebrated artist T H Matteson." The circular is offering this engraving for $5. These terms are on the inside pages, including testimonials for the" beautiful engraving."  (I could not find an example on the web but didn't look very long)

Condition:  There is a rather large hole at one mid fold and two edge tears.   Other separations which appear on the back page.  The second scan shows the condition of the stampless cover which is stained.  I'm not sure about the cancel but believe it is New York.

James K Polk-Silk Broadside-Rare
Item #: NEW-0013004

This item is not listed in Threads of History and in fact I have never seen another example.  The silk broadside is mounted on thick cardboard which has some age to it. The goal for this old method of preservation was reached as the broadside only has a few tiny edge problems, hardly worth mentioning.  Normally when you see something old mounted in this manner there is some acidic toning from the board.  This is not the case with the broadside and while I would not recommend this process for anything it did save the item from the stress of hanging which often causes separations in silk items.

The broadside measures 27 X 20 and one half inches.  The message is titled "President James K Polk's First Message to Both Houses of the Congress of the United States of American", delivered at the city of Washington, December 2, 1845.  James Polk

Andrew Jackson-Kellogg Brothers Lithograph
Item #: NEW-0012834

This is not an original lithograph of this famous silhouette of Andrew Jackson which was drawn from life by William H Brown but the a reprint made in 1931.  Lyzon Galleries in Nashville made a later one, I'm not sure when, but if you see one in the original frame they will have their stamp on the back.  Their reprints are quite good and the stock paper is very white.  There is age toning to this one, having been removed from an old frame which also had a period newsprint periodical containing an article on Jackson.  The top and bottom are crimped from being placed in a frame which was not big enough.  Measures around 16 + by 12 inches.  Small edge tears.

I will pass on this information that I learned from a customer as to how to determine an original lithograph from a reprint.  I had always thought that you could tell a lithograph by looking at it with a magnifying glass.  I was informed that a sign of an original are pinholes in two corners of the print if you hold it up to the light. These were used to line up the paper for the second stone - given this is a two stone process. You can also see the heavy inking on the silhouette. The white highlights can be seen in the wavy hair of Jackson and on his clothes. The originals were hand painted with watercolor. The 1931 reprints are good but deceiving as they were printed using the photogravure process. Therefore you will not see any dot pattern as they are laid on with ink. Counterfeiters in years past used the photogravure process to print currency.

This beautiful print has the appearance of color lithography but it doesn't have the irregular ovals under magnification.  Neither does it have the uniform dots so I don't know what it is but I'm going to hang it in my home until someone buys it as it looks great. The paper on the back has acidic toning.  It would look nice with a Jackson signature.  Measures 20 by 14 and a half inches.  One large but light corner crease which will not show when framed.

Andrew Jackson Litho-A Grand Functionary-Clay
Item #: NEW-0011324

No paypal on this item though payment plans can be arranged. This extremely rare1829 lithograph is believed to be the first use of caricature of Jackson in office. The title is "A Grand Functionary. " 'The Lord High Keeper." This was drawn by Edward Williams Clay. The scene pictures Jackson locking up Tobias Watkins, the fourth auditor in the Treasury Department, for government fraud.  It had been discovered that his accounts were short by some seven thousand dollars.  Watkins fled the city but was found, convicted and locked up. This happened right after Jackson's inauguration and was a public sensation.   Jackson had promised to clean up corruption and this was an indicator to the public that he was serious. Jackson had many detractors and Clay in this litho presented another viewpoint as Jackson is depicted as a sinister jailor with Watkins' hands reaching out for justice and Jackson double locking him in warning, "I'm acting in my magisterial capacity!!! D__n the fellow he opposed my election and if he is released, he'll start a newspaper against me.  Here let him rot!!!."

The lithograph measures 14 by 11 inches.  It has been deacidified and encapsulated in mylar, easily removed, if desired.  Large creases at top right and bottom left.  Somewhat crumpled appearance and some stains and edge tears.  The first photo shows the whole lithograph and the close up of a portion was by scan.

CDV-Charles Fremont-Anthony Back mark
Item #: NEW-007631

I purchased this CDV from a reputable Ebay dealer as I recognized it as a rare pose of John Fremont. Looking at it closely I now have concerns about it. It is very murky and spotty in appearance. Most suspicious is the large crease on the photo with no accompanying crease on the board. It is definitely a photograph however which I suspect was floated off another CDV. Under magnification you can also see a oval ring at the top of the photo It appears that most of the albumen is gone. Under magnification one can see Brady N Y. within the photo itself. On the back is what appears to be a period ID of Fremont, misspelling his name. At any rate I am offering this image to someone less paranoid than me for what I paid for it who would like to complete their collection of CDV's of Presidential contenders.

Since I have no control over this element let me just say that the advanced collector will probably not be happy with this specimen, however it is a fraction of the value of a nice specimen so other collectors who can't quite afford a nice example may be happy to add it to their collection.
